Hirschmann OpenRail Concept

There are many differences between office Ethernet switches and industrial Ethernet switches. Some of these differences are both obvious and well known. These include:

  • Extended operational temperature range
  • Resistance to shock, vibration, and electromagnetic interference*
  • Resistance to dust and water**
  • Industrial-grade connectors
  • The ability to operate using the complete range of industrial-standard voltages
  • Conformance to standards for marine operation, railways, electrical substations***, explosive areas, etc.
  • Extensive security features****
  Hirschmann OpenRail Industrial Ethernet Switch
There are DIN Rail Ethernet switches on the market today which offer some or most of the above.

But that is not the end of the story. In many industrial Ethernet networks, the typical office switch configuration of "2 fibre optic ports and 24 RJ45 twisted pair ports" just doesn't fit. Greater flexibility in the choice of port media and connector type is required.

And that's just the hardware.....

Different industrial Ethernet applications require different Ethernet switch functionality.

Functionality costs money.

Unused functionality wastes money.

So freedom of choice should not be confined to just the hardware. Of course, manufacturing a DIN Rail Ethernet switch that precisely matches an application's individual requirements in terms of hardware and functionality would be prohibitively expensive and time-consuming.

Until now, that is.

With 1,000 physical permutations, and five firmware versions, the OpenRail system from Hirschmann can provide a customised solution that meets the challenges of the most stringent industrial Ethernet applications.
